Repositioning Cruises from Galveston: Routes, Lines and Timing

Repositioning cruises from Galveston are rare. The port runs Caribbean and Mexico cruises all year, so most of its ships never need to leave, and the one-way voyages that do appear are a handful of Panama Canal moves to and from the West Coast, an occasional transatlantic crossing to Lisbon, and short ship swaps with Florida. Carnival, Disney Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean run nearly all of them.

That scarcity is the main thing to know. If you live in Texas and want a crossing, Galveston can save you a flight to Florida, but only if one of its few sailings fits your dates. This guide shows what is actually on sale, when it sails and how to handle the logistics at both ends.

What sails from Galveston: our data

Of the 517 repositioning sailings in our repositioning cruise finder, each checked on the cruise line’s own website in late September 2026, 7 start or end in Galveston between October 2026 and December 2027. Here is the full list.

Four of the seven are Panama Canal transits, one is a transatlantic crossing and two are Caribbean ship swaps. Lengths run from 9 to 16 nights, and 14 is the most common. Lines add sailings as schedules open, so the finder link above shows the current list rather than this snapshot.

The Panama Canal moves to the West Coast

These are the Galveston repositioning cruises most worth knowing about. A ship that spends the winter on Gulf itineraries and the summer in Alaska or on the Mexican Riviera has to cross from one ocean to the other, and the canal is the only practical way. The line sells the trip as a one-way canal cruise, usually 14 to 16 nights.

Disney Magic is the clearest example in the current schedules. It sails Galveston to San Diego through the canal in late April 2027, then continues from San Diego to Vancouver in early May for its Alaska season. In the fall it does the reverse, coming back from Vancouver to San Diego in September and from San Diego to Galveston in November. Anyone patient enough can follow the ship the whole way from Texas to British Columbia on back-to-back bookings.

Carnival Spirit runs a similar pattern from the Pacific Northwest: Seattle to Galveston through the canal in September 2027, 16 nights with Cabo San Lucas and Cartagena on the way.

Every one of these routes calls at Cartagena, Colombia, or another South American port. That is not a coincidence. The Passenger Vessel Services Act stops a foreign-flagged ship from carrying passengers one way between two US ports unless the voyage reaches a “distant foreign port”. CBP defines nearby foreign ports as those in North America, Central America, Bermuda and the West Indies, except Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao. Mexico and Panama count as nearby, so Cartagena is what makes a Galveston to San Diego cruise legal. Galveston to Europe

The only Galveston transatlantic in our data is Carnival Miracle’s 14-night crossing to Lisbon, leaving in early May 2027 and calling at Bermuda, Ponta Delgada in the Azores and Funchal on Madeira. That is about the same length as many Florida crossings, which run 12 to 17 nights. The older idea that a Texas crossing takes 15 to 18 nights because of the Gulf detour does not hold for this sailing.

It is still a long time at sea. Between Bermuda and the Azores there are several consecutive sea days, and the clocks go forward an hour on most nights as the ship heads east. Ship swaps with Florida

When Royal Caribbean moves a ship between Galveston and Florida, it sells the move as a one-way Caribbean cruise. In August 2027, Icon of the Seas sails from Miami to Galveston in 9 nights while Symphony of the Seas goes the other way, Galveston to Fort Lauderdale, in 10. Both stop in Willemstad on Curacao and Oranjestad on Aruba, and that again is the cabotage rule at work: Aruba and Curacao are the only Caribbean islands CBP treats as distant foreign ports.

These swaps are not ocean crossings, but they are the cheapest way from Texas to try a one-way cruise. The flight home from Florida is short and domestic, and the ships are among the largest at sea.

When Galveston repositioning happens

• April and May: ships leave the Gulf for the Pacific (Alaska and the West Coast) or for Europe.
• August: occasional Florida swaps, timed around the start of a new Caribbean deployment.
• September to November: ships return from the Pacific through the canal for the winter season.

The windows match the rest of the repositioning calendar. What differs is volume. Florida and New York each see dozens of one-way sailings a year, Galveston a handful, and a single sailing selling out can remove the only option for that season. All of the 2027 sailings above were already bookable on the lines’ sites in September 2026, so a year’s notice is normal, not early.

Other Gulf Coast ports to consider

If Galveston has nothing on your dates, the rest of the Gulf adds a few more one-way sailings. Our finder lists 21 sailings touching Gulf Coast ports in the same period. A few from the Gulf side:

• New Orleans: Royal Caribbean’s Mariner of the Seas sails to Barcelona in April 2027 (17 nights via Miami, Casablanca and Cadiz), and Norwegian Breakaway runs one-way between New Orleans and Boston in spring and fall.
• Mobile: Carnival Spirit moves between Mobile and Seattle through the canal, 16 nights each way.
• Tampa: Panama Canal departures to Seattle and Los Angeles in April 2027, and several westbound arrivals from Europe in the fall.

Getting to the port and getting home

Airports. Galveston has no commercial airport. Houston Hobby is roughly 45 miles away and Bush Intercontinental about 70, so allow one to two hours by road. The Port of Galveston points passengers to shuttle and car services from both airports, and the lines sell transfers.

Terminals. The port’s cruise terminals sit along Harborside Drive. Royal Caribbean uses Terminal 10 at Pier 10, and Carnival, Disney, Princess, Norwegian and MSC use Terminals 25, 28 and 16, with assignments that can change by ship. Check your boarding documents rather than relying on an old list.

Parking. Port-run lots are patrolled by Port of Galveston Police and discounted when reserved online. On a one-way cruise, though, parking is usually the wrong choice: you are not coming back to Galveston, so your car would sit there while you fly home from San Diego or Lisbon. Get dropped off, or take a shuttle.

Documents. CBP lets US citizens on closed-loop cruises, which leave and return to the same US port, use a birth certificate and photo ID instead of a passport. That exception does not apply to a one-way voyage. Bring a passport book, valid well beyond the trip, for any of these sailings, and for the Lisbon crossing check the Schengen entry rules before you go.

The flight home. From San Diego, Seattle or Fort Lauderdale it is a domestic one-way ticket, usually easy to buy at reasonable notice. Who a Galveston repositioning cruise suits

Texans and central US travelers who want a canal transit without flying to Florida or Los Angeles first get the most from these sailings. If your dates are fixed, do not count on Galveston. Check the finder first, and if nothing fits, look at New Orleans and Tampa next, then Florida, where the choice is several times larger.
