Holland America has been crossing oceans for a very long time, and it shows in the details that matter on a long voyage: sheltered promenade decks you can actually walk in weather, a serious lecture program, and public rooms built for sitting rather than queuing. For two weeks at sea, it is one of the strongest mainstream choices available.

How Holland America repositions

The fleet follows the standard seasonal pattern, with transatlantic crossings in spring and autumn, Pacific repositioning around the Alaska season, and longer voyages linking Australia, Asia and the Americas. Holland America runs a disproportionate number of long itineraries for a mainstream line, so its repositioning schedule is fuller than most.

The line also has a strong presence in Seattle and Vancouver for the Alaska season, which means reliable coastal repositioning runs each spring and autumn.

What makes it good for a crossing

The ships have proper promenades. A full wraparound deck, sheltered under the lifeboats, is a nearly extinct feature and an enormously useful one when you want air on a gray day mid-ocean.

The enrichment is real. Guest speakers, a music program that runs to actual musicians in several venues, and cooking and digital workshops. Holland America has invested in the things people do on a sea day rather than the things they photograph in port.

The crowd is older and quieter. This is the most-cited fact about the line and it is true. On a port-heavy Caribbean week that reads as a drawback to some passengers. On a crossing it reads as the point.

Mid-size ships. Big enough to be steady, small enough that the ship does not feel like a shopping center. Several of the fleet carry under 2,000 passengers, which is a comfortable number for fourteen days.

What it costs

Upper-mainstream pricing: above Carnival and MSC, roughly level with Princess, below the premium lines. Holland America discounts long voyages more readily than short ones, and its repositioning sailings are often where the better fares appear.

The line also has unusually good solo pricing on some sailings, with reduced single supplements that make a crossing viable for one person at closer to the double-occupancy rate.

Who it suits

Holland America suits anyone whose priority on a crossing is comfort, quiet and something interesting to listen to. It suits families poorly, not by policy but by atmosphere: there is little aimed at children and few children aboard.
