Cunard is the exception in this category, because its most famous ocean voyages are not repositioning cruises at all. Queen Mary 2 runs scheduled transatlantic crossings between Southampton and New York as a regular service, in both directions, through most of the year. The ship is not moving between seasons; crossing the Atlantic is the job.

That distinction matters, because it changes both what you get and what you pay.

Crossings versus repositioning

A repositioning cruise is cheap because the line has to move the ship anyway and would rather sell the cabins than sail empty. A Cunard transatlantic crossing is a scheduled liner service with its own demand, sold at a price that reflects it. You are paying for the crossing as a product, not benefiting from the line’s logistics problem.

Queen Mary 2 was also built for the job in a way no other passenger ship afloat was. It has a deeper draught, a longer hull and more steel in the bow than a cruise ship of similar size, because it was designed to hold schedule across the North Atlantic in winter rather than to potter between Caribbean islands. Passengers who are anxious about ocean weather usually find it the most reassuring ship on the route.

Cunard’s actual repositioning voyages

Cunard does also reposition, in the ordinary sense. Its ships move between Europe, the Caribbean, Australia and Asia on a seasonal cycle, and those voyages behave like any other repositioning sailing: one way, longer than average, and priced to fill.

Those are the Cunard sailings to watch for value. A Mediterranean to Caribbean repositioning voyage on Queen Victoria or Queen Elizabeth can be markedly cheaper per night than the Southampton to New York crossing on Queen Mary 2, for a broadly similar onboard experience.

What the experience is like

More formal than anything else at sea. Gala evenings still mean black tie for a large part of the ship, and the dress code is enforced rather than suggested. Afternoon tea is served daily with white-gloved waiters. There is a ballroom, a planetarium on Queen Mary 2, and a lecture program that runs to genuine authorities rather than a retired cruise director with slides.

If that sounds like theatre, it is, and the passengers who love Cunard love it precisely for that. If it sounds like a dress code you did not sign up for, the line is not for you and no amount of ocean will change it.

What it costs

The Southampton to New York crossing is typically seven nights and prices as a premium product, comparable to Celebrity or above per night. Cunard’s seasonal repositioning voyages are better value, and the line runs genuine fare sales on them.

One practical advantage: because Queen Mary 2 crossings run in both directions on a schedule, you can sail one way and fly the other without the usual one-way-flight gamble, and Cunard often sells an air-inclusive fare that handles it for you.

Who it suits

Cunard suits travelers who want to cross an ocean the way it used to be done, who like formality rather than tolerating it, and who would rather have a ballroom than a water park. For a first ocean crossing it is an excellent and unusually stable choice. For a cheap two weeks at sea, look at the mainstream repositioning market instead.
